It’s driving me nuts! We’re an LLC and everything I’ve read has just confused me more, and people I’ve talked to have conflicting opinions. Do I need to report our health insurance premiums paid to our plan provider on the 1099-MISC?

My husband gets a government pension. His health insurance premiums are deducted from the annuity payments each month. (I don’t know yet if the premiums are paid with pre-tax or post-tax dollars, looking into it.) Are those premiums deductible in the medical expenses area of our federal income taxes?

I purchase my own health insurance. The one thing in health reform that would have helped people like me would have been to allow the deduction premiums from our taxes, just like people with employer-provided insurance and self-employed individuals can do.
Now that people will have to be purchasing health insurance, will they have to pay with after-tax dollars too? I haven’t heard of anything in the bill that addressed this. You’d think with 2000+ pages they could have squeezed this in.
If you itemize, can you deduct health insurance premiums that you have paid?

I used the free version of Tax Act and was surprised when a box popped up and asked me for the amount of health insurance premiums I had paid.

If a person requests a court order for reimbursement of health insurance premiums, and tells the courts that the cost is $450 per month when the actual cost is $350 per month, would this make the court order invalid? Also, if this person prosecuted for failing to pay this amount in full would this be malicious prosecution? Balto., Maryland

Our company just introduced a health insurance surcharge for smokers. Is this not discriminatory? Should we also punish those who are obese or those who have significant fat around the belly because they are more at risk for a heart attack and type 2 diabetes? Or should older people pay higher premiums because they are more likely to get sick than their young colleagues ?

I work for a large health insurance company. Our records show the correlation between higher BMI and higher disease rate. Obesity is the #1 cause of disease. Should those who can prove a low BMI by a certificate from their doctor be given a discount on their health insurance premium? This would basically mean that overweight persons would be charged more unless they can lose weight, go to an inpatient treatment facility to lose weight, or prove that their obesity is irreversable.

In the publications I’ve read, it said for sole shareholders of an s-corporation NOT to deduct health insurance premiums pre-tax from their payroll checks. However, I am working on our 2006 taxes and don’t see where we will claim this medical insurance expense. Am I just missing something obvious? Where do I report this … and I’m pretty sure it’s not combine with “medical expense” because we don’t have to reach the 7.25% of AGI threshhold.

I read this story today: “The Obama administration is asking Anthem Blue Cross to justify its plans to raise health insurance premiums…”
“Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius sent a letter to the company’s president on Monday calling the planned increases extraordinary and difficult to understand. She wrote that the company has an obligation to provided a detailed justification for the rate hikes to the public.”
I thought that health insurers were state regulated and regulated by the NAIC–not the Secretary of Health and Human Services.
Anthem is in California if that makes a difference.
