Separate payment for paying insurance premium. Is it legal?

02 Jun

A friend of mine is a contractor and he is currently negotiating his rate with the recruiter. One of decision he made was to get health insurance somewhere else (not thru recruiter’s company).

During the negotiation, the recruiter wants to pay for his expense for health insurance by giving personal check on monthly basis. His paycheck will reflect only total hours he works on the project times hourly rate. He is doing W2.

My questions:

1. Is this a legal practice?
2. I assume he would report the extra income when filing the tax. Is health insurance premium expense deductible?

Thanks.

Purpose of limited premium payment life insurance?

25 Apr

What is the purpose of limited premium payment term life insurance? Is it so that the insurance companies can get hold of your premiums over a shorter period, or does it actually work out cheaper in the longer term for the policyholder? I appreciate that you may chose the premium term to be limited if you are close to retirement, but let’s ignore that case for now.

Got into a fender bender before the first car payment & insurance premium are due, what to do?

09 Apr

Ok, so I bought a used vehicle (2005 Mazda 3) in excellent condition for my wife. A couple of days later, she hit the back of a small SUV. There was no damage done to the other vehicle, but now the hood on our Mazda is messed up. There are several reasons why I didn’t call the insurance company right away: the first reason is that even though I got insured the day I drove off the lot, we hadn’t even had the car for a week before she got into the accident (I havn’t even mailed the first insurance premium payment, not even the first car payment), and second I was told by an auto body shop that the repairs would be less than $500 which is what my deductible is anyways, so I had no reason to call Progressive. Now that they gave me a definite estimate of over $1000 for the repairs, I’m not sure if I should call Progressive after so many days of having the fender bender … and the first premium and car payment are still not due. Should I call my insurance company to get help with the repairs (I’ve been with them for over two years with no previous accidents)?

What’s your monthly car payment? And Insurance?

05 Mar

I’m interested to see what people pay for their cars and car insurance compared to me.
I’m a single 28 year old female living in a city. (RI)
I pay $282 for a new Jetta lease and insurance is $157 per month.

Just seeing if this is the average….

I’m also moving to NY suburbs and am considering changing my insurance, anyone know if I can do this if I own a home in RI still?

RI has month to month sales tax, but has higher insurace premiums and NY wants sales tax up front, but NY suburbs insurance costs half as much as what I pay now. I wonder if its worth it to switch states???
Well, I guess for a Brand New Car, I’m not doing bad at all. And I love my JETTA, can you say HEATED SEATS…
Heck yeah…

Thanks for all your input it was great.
I wish I could make enough like some people though and buy a car and pay insurance up front. But with student loans at 30K its impossible.
